Safiya is the second Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) to join the Wellstone/SMCHH family. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Georgetown University, a master’s degree in nursing from Old Dominion University, and a post master’s certificate of midwifery from Shenandoah University. She is board certified through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) and a member of several professional organizations to include the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), Association for Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), Army Nurse Corps Association (ANCA), and Sigma Theta Tau. Safiya joins us after retiring from the United States Army with 20 years of service. Her experience includes over 20 years of nursing, of which 11 years she served as a labor and delivery nurse and a CNM for the past 9 years.
Safiya is passionate about improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes. She strongly believes that inclusion of the midwifery model of care can significantly improve those outcomes. She strives to empower women and their families through shared-decision making while providing care that is compassionate, holistic, and evidence-based. Safiya is proud to grow midwifery led care in this community with Wellstone/SMCHH and is committed to serving the women entrusting her with their care.
As a certified nurse midwife, she is licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN) with a special population focus in women and newborns. CNMs are experts in physiologic pregnancy and birth. They care for women and adolescents throughout the lifespan including well-woman, contraceptive services, GYN, prenatal care, labor, birth, postpartum, and newborn care. While midwives primarily care for healthy women and their newborns, they may also care for women and their babies in consultation and collaboration with other members of the healthcare team as warranted should complications arise.
